Graffiti Kings workshops will be overseen by our workshop leader Julian.
Julian Phethean is a Professional artist with a Degree in community arts/education and over 15 years practical experience working with young people. He is also a  qualified youth worker and has spent the last few years working within Youth Offending Teams doing early intervention, casework and reparation.

We create Graffiti Art projects that engage young people in the creative process, producing pieces of art while allowing personal expression, through interaction within their environment. We work with the larger community to create extended initiatives through eg.  pathways to education, employment, diversion from negative activities.

Why We Do It:

We have a proven track record of successfully engaging in an authentic way with young people. We recognise, from personal experience, what Graffiti means, in its cultural, social and personal context. The bridge it creates for young people to communicate to the world at large, the creative process that allows problem solving, design and planning - key skills in the working and educational environment. Graffiti is a beginning, not an end in itself - we have moved on and created value for ourselves.

Why Work With Us?

Our varied backgrounds prove that you can ultimately make a choice in life and change your expected outcomes despite your circumstances. We personally relate to the many disadvantages faced by many young people today.

The Graffiti KiNGS programmes can be delivered either in partnership with other existing initiatives or as 'lead' work to engage difficult to reach groups, allowing and fostering opportunities for long term support/resources to take root.

The aim is to encourage qualities such as, dignity, equality and respect, for the individual self and for others.

'Identity' forms the basis of all our projects as it is through self recognition and understanding your environment and your place within it, that you can begin to express yourself truthfully and with imagination.

We champion the concept, that 'from this moment on' an individual can start to reflect and shape a new sense of self worth and value and that they can initiate a change in their lives through action, participation and responsibility for themselves.

Outcomes:

Our Graffiti Art programme fosters a sense of team work, self reflection and critical appraisal of self. These are assets to any individual and intrinsic to the artistic process.

The workshops can act as a preparatory initiative to engage, for example, young people with the opportunites of Higher Education in Art/Design/Publishing/Media Institutions.

The documented process and finished body of work could be the beginnings of, or add to an existing, portfolio of work.

The very real skills learned throughout the workshops introduce vocational experience which can be documented and appraised where of value and appropriate to the client.

Graffiti Workshops

Each programme is tailored to the specific client group, their needs, abilities and necessary outcomes etc. Therefore timelines and resources are variable.

We can work indoors or outdoors; from digital or freehand design, planning, acquiring sites, boards, textiles etc. to executing final pieces in a range of media e.g. aerosol, paint, print, stencil, markers. Themes and outcomes will be developed through consultation with the user group or funding body.

We can work directly on your site or with groups to source potential sites, contacting owners and negotiating usage.

It’s amazing what can happen when you engage with your community!

Testimonial

The Graffiti KiNGS were great to work with. Great communication with organising the workshop unlike others we had contacted who did not get back to us at all. The artist worked well with the group of young people and encouraged them with their ideas, he was very professional in his approach to the workshop, again unlike other artists we had used in the past.

The young people carried out the project while the Graffiti KiNGS helped and guided them.

I would recommend the team to anyone wanting to carry out an organised Graffiti Workshop! - Angela Pomroy, Manchester.

Visiting Graffiti Kings at their studio in south east London is a great experience for young people to work in a new setting. It is the ideal environment to engage hard to reach young people. The experience is a really dynamic way to rekindle young people’s interest in learning.

The workshop is a safe place in which to work and issues of Health & Safety are comprehensively addressed before the session starts. The young people were really excited by the prospect of working in a lively fully functional art studio.

The facilitators took time to make the young people feel at ease and gave them a lively, interesting graffiti history lesson from its start until the present day. On a practical level they clearly demonstrated correct techniques and what would happen to pieces of art if incorrect techniques were employed. Methods to enhance work were also taught. This scaffolding approach enabled young people to make swift progress and boosted their confidence and self belief.

The facilitators were open and encouraging. They gave the learners an insight into their own personal journeys in the graffiti world, some of which had been difficult and challenging. The learners were able to relate to this. The sessions helped to set a positive tone for the young people and enabled them to believe that, whatever their situation, with hard work and perseverance, they are able to create a strategy and a platform to achieve personal goals.

The workshops were delivered with great enthusiasm and commitment. A culture of inclusion and diversity were developed throughout the session. Everyone, regardless of age, colour, gender and religion could take part and achieve.

At every stage of the workshop the facilitators encouraged the young people to express their creativity on canvas, which the young people relished. They responded well to advice and produced some stunning art work which even surprised them. Any initial reluctance to engage soon evaporated and the seamless transition from graffiti to positivity to finished article was achieved.

At the end of the workshop the young people gained valuable experience of meeting people who believed in their ability. The positive message of what can be achieved if hard work and determination are applied was very much the driving force of the day. Each young person took away their finished piece of art, which I am sure would enable them to remember the experience and which would underpin their sense of achievement.

We shall certainly be using Graffiti Kings again and we would thoroughly recommend their workshops to all organisations working with young people.
